iittala Aalto Clear Vase - 6-1/4"

Enduring beauty. Designed in 1936, the iittala Aalto Vase is still considered to be one of the most famous glass objects and it's easy to see why. Aalto's innovative design continues to enthrall the world with the craftsmanship required to produce just one mouth-blown vase, it takes seven craftsman, 12 work stages and 30 hours. It remains a pertinent fixture in modern design, earning a permanent spot at the MoMA in New York. The vase's organic, free-form design is truly unique and makes for an exceptionally versatile piece to own. The Aalto vase can house fresh blooms, hors d'oeuvres and utensils. It can also function as glass art when left empty.

MORE ABOUT iittala Aalto Clear Vase - 6-1/4"

Since it's unveiling at the Paris World's Fair in 1937, the Aalto vase has been an international symbol of timeless design. It's freehand form has been the subject of much debate; some say it is based on Aalto's sketched called "The Eskimo Woman's Leather Breeches," while to others its an obvious ode to the fluid lines of Finland's lake-rich landscape. Though the award-winning design's shape seems like an organic occurrence, it requires 7 craftsmen, 12 work stages and 30 hours to create just one of these beautiful mouth-blown works of art. Aalto wanted the end user to determine its purpose; fill with flowers, fruit, or simply leave empty to display as the design icon it has been and will always be.

You don't have to arrange flowers with this vase. You just throw them in and they always look fabulous. The vase is designed to do all the work and it somehow does.

I've wanted this for a long time. The vase is a wonderful addition to my Iittala collection, which includes Toikka birds, candlesticks, another vase, highball and lowball glasses and several serving pieces. My grandmother's maiden name was Aalto (not related).
